On July 2, 2002, the first unit of the first phase of China's Ling Ao Nuclear Power Station (LNPS) was put into operation, officially starting commercial operation and beginning to supply power to the electricity market of Guangdong Province.
The Ling Ao Nuclear Power Plant is one of China's significant energy projects during the 9th Five-Year Plan period, with a total investment of approximately 4 billion USD.
It is the second large-scale commercial nuclear power plant built in Guangdong, located in Ling Ao Village on the Dapeng Peninsula in eastern Shenzhen, just 1.2 km away from the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station.
Known as China's "2nd Nuclear Station", the Ling Ao Nuclear Power Station is the 1st million-kilowatt class nuclear power station independently constructed by China.
Its first and second units were constructed in the first phase. After a series of rigorous reviews by the National Nuclear Safety Administration, the first unit began installing nuclear fuel at the end of 2001.
On February 4 of the following year, it safely reached criticality for the first time; and on February 17, it successfully completed the first trial run of the turbine generator set, with all technical parameters meeting the specifications.
On February 28, the 1-million-kilowatt first unit successfully achieved grid connection and power generation, 48 days ahead of the original schedule.
After years of effort, China had initially developed the design capability for million-kilowatt-class nuclear power stations at that time.
Following the commissioning of the first unit of the LNPS, it completed the task of generating billions of kilowatt-hours of electricity, providing robust energy support to the power-deficient Shenzhen.
